Brazilian Blowout vs keratin vs hair botox — what actually works in LA humidity
By Burcin Goksu, master colorist — · Service-level guide
The question we actually get most often is not "which treatment is best." It is "which one survives a 90-degree June day on the way home from the airport." LA's June Gloom plus August heat plus chlorine-bleached pool water is a triple test most smoothing treatments fail when chosen for the wrong hair. The honest answer changes by curl pattern and by your next three days, not by which formula is trending on Instagram.
The chemistry, briefly, with the marketing stripped off
Brazilian Blowout is a brand and a chemistry. The current acid-free formula uses glyoxylic acid plus a liquid keratin solution sealed in with high heat (450°F flat iron). It smooths frizz, softens curl by about 30%, and lasts 10–12 weeks. The original formaldehyde formula is no longer used in California salons.
Keratin treatment is a generic category. Different brands use different formulas — some still rely on formaldehyde-releasing agents activated by heat. The treatment relaxes curl pattern more aggressively (40–60% reduction), works through the cortex, and lasts 3–6 months. We currently use a glyoxylic acid keratin at MUA, not formaldehyde.
Hair botox is the deep-conditioning option. Despite the name, it has no relation to Botox the neurotoxin. The formula is hydrolyzed keratin, vitamin B5, amino acids, and silicone. It does not change curl pattern at all — it fills in cuticle damage, adds shine, and reduces frizz by smoothing the hair surface. Lasts 6–10 weeks.
The LA-specific filter that should decide for you
Most national salon guides write about humidity as a generic factor. LA humidity is not generic — it has three distinct seasons that each break a different treatment:
- May Gray + June Gloom (coastal marine layer). 60–75% humidity inland, higher near the coast. Brazilian Blowout handles this well. Hair botox holds for the first 4 weeks but starts losing its smoothing effect after week 5. Keratin shrugs it off.
- August heat (90°F+ valleys). Dry heat with sun. UV pulls warm tones forward in any treatment. The smoothing itself is fine — it is the color underneath that suffers.
- Santa Ana winds (October–December). Extreme dry. Hair botox shines here because of the conditioning component. Keratin can read flat. Brazilian Blowout is neutral.
So if you live in Venice or Santa Monica, hair botox might genuinely outperform on the marine layer days. If you live in Sherman Oaks or Pasadena, you are inland-dry and a longer-lasting keratin is logical. If you work in Beverly Hills daily and ride the gradient between marine and dry, Brazilian Blowout is the middle-path that adapts.
The 3-day rule nobody enforces honestly
Here is the part of smoothing treatments that gets glossed over: traditional keratin needs 72 hours of no water touching hair, no ponytails, no tucking behind ears, no glasses pushed onto your head. We have had clients break this rule and call us upset that the treatment "didn't take." It did not fail. The rule was broken.
Brazilian Blowout has zero post-treatment wait — you can wash same day. Hair botox has a 24-hour wait. Keratin's 3-day window is the strictest.
Before booking, look at your next 3 days. If you have a workout class with sweat, a beach trip, a wedding where you'll touch your hair, or you wear a helmet for cycling — keratin is the wrong choice that week. We will reschedule or steer you to Brazilian Blowout instead.

Real recommendations by client type
Beverly Hills working professional, fine wavy hair, color-treated: Brazilian Blowout. Color stays, frizz goes, no 3-day wait so you can fly out for meetings.
Brentwood mom, 3A curls, time-constrained: Keratin every 4 months. The longest-lasting option, fewest salon visits per year.
Studio City actor between productions, color-treated, frequent stylings: Hair botox. Adds shine for camera, no curl change so wig-fitting is unaffected, can wash same week.
Venice surfer, curly, weekly ocean swimmer: None of these. Salt water dissolves smoothing chemistry within 2–3 weeks. We recommend a clarifying + deep-conditioning regimen instead and skip the treatment money.
FAQ
Is Brazilian Blowout safe if I dye my hair?
Yes — Brazilian Blowout is one of the safest options for color-treated hair because the acid-free formula seals tone in. Schedule it 2 weeks after your color appointment so the gloss settles. Same-day color + BB is possible but we charge for both and the BB cost is $200 on top of color.
How is hair botox different from regular hair botox claims online?
Real hair botox is a deep-conditioning treatment with hydrolyzed keratin, B5, and amino acids. It does not contain neurotoxin Botox — the name is marketing. It smooths and adds shine without changing curl pattern. At MUA it is $150, lasts 6–10 weeks.
Can I do keratin while pregnant?
We do not perform Brazilian Blowout or traditional keratin treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Hair botox (no aldehydes, no formaldehyde) is safe for pregnant clients and is what we recommend.
Will any of these damage my hair?
None of the three damage healthy hair when performed properly. Repeated traditional keratin treatments can build up over time and require a clarifying reset. Brazilian Blowout and hair botox can be done back-to-back without buildup concern.
What if I have extensions?
Tape-in extensions: hair botox only — the others can loosen adhesive. Sew-in or weft: any of the three works. Always disclose extensions at booking — we may add 30 minutes to the appointment.
