Overview

When you need an updo

An updo is event hair — done by a professional, set with stage-grade product, and pinned to last from arrival through after-party. It is not the same thing as a blow-dry. It is the silhouette your outfit was built around.

We see this service most for prom, junior and senior galas, charity balls, holiday parties, photo shoots, music videos, awards shows, and red-carpet events. For wedding-day styling — including bridal trials, bridal-party group bookings, and on-location work — head to our Bridal program, which has its own pricing and team.

Types of updo

What we style

Bring inspiration photos. We work in the silhouette family that fits your hair length, density, and the occasion. Common requests:

Sleek chignon

A low, smooth bun at the nape — refined, formal, and almost universally flattering. Pairs cleanly with strapless and high-neck dresses.

French twist

A vertical fold up the back of the head, classic and structured. Best on medium-length hair with weight; we add modern softness at the front.

Low bun

Soft and lived-in, sitting at the nape with a few face-framing pieces left out. The most photographed updo of the last five years.

Ballerina bun

Center-crown placement, sleek across the head, with a tight, sculpted knot. Modern, editorial, and dance-floor ready.

Romantic curls

Loose, brushed-out curls pinned away from the face on one or both sides. Great for prom, holiday parties, and photo-heavy events.

Sleek pony

High or low, slicked at the crown, with a wrap of hair concealing the elastic. The most modern alternative to a traditional updo.

We also do hollywood waves, vintage finger waves, half-up looks, textured top knots, accessory styling around combs and headbands, and editorial pin-work for photo and music-video sets. Bring photos — we'll match them or honestly tell you what works on your hair.

Prep

Prep notes that change everything

The single biggest factor in how an updo holds is what you do with your hair the night before. The honest version:

  • Don't wash that morning. Wash the night before. Updos grip best on day-old hair — clean enough to be soft, broken-in enough to hold pins.
  • Skip heavy conditioner at the root. If you must wash that morning, condition mid-shaft to ends only.
  • Let the hair dry fully. Wet hair will not hold a pin without slipping by hour two.
  • Don't apply oil or leave-in serum the day-of. Oils prevent product grip; we will use the right product in studio.
  • Don't blow it out smooth at home. A bit of natural texture is friend, not enemy.
  • Eat before you arrive. Updos are an hour of sitting still. Show up fueled.
What to bring

For your appointment

  • 2 to 5 inspiration photos. Pinterest screenshots, magazine clippings, or saved Instagrams. The more reference points the better. Show the stylist different angles.
  • The outfit (or a photo of it). Especially the neckline. A high-neck dress and a low bun are very different conversations than a strapless gown and a sleek pony.
  • Any hair accessories. Combs, clips, headbands, fascinators, veils for non-bridal photo shoots, jeweled pins.
  • A clean face. If you are pairing with makeup, we work hair first.
  • A button-down shirt or zip-front top to leave in. You will not be pulling anything over your head once the updo is set.
Pairing

Pairing the updo with makeup

Most event clients book hair and makeup back-to-back. The order matters: hair first, makeup second, so the makeup artist works on a face that already accounts for the hairline of the finished style. If you book makeup before hair, plan extra time and prepare for the artist to clean up powder fall-out at the end.

For everyday glam, see Makeup. For editorial, film, TV, and red-carpet appointments, book Studio Makeup, which is photo- and camera-tested at a different intensity. For wedding-day pairing, head to the Bridal program.

By event

Picking the right shape for the occasion

The most flattering updo is the one built for the event you are actually going to. Here are the silhouettes that we book most by category.

Prom & school dances

Romantic curls pinned away from the face, half-up styles with soft volume at the crown, and modern low buns are the most photographed. Younger guests often want curls left out at the front; we recommend pinning at least one strand back per side so the look stays through dancing.

Galas & charity balls

Sleek chignons, classic French twists, and ballerina buns dominate the gala silhouette. The cleaner the line, the more elegant the read in step-and-repeat photography. Bring jeweled pins or a pair of pearl combs if you have them.

Holiday parties

Hollywood waves down or pinned to one side, sleek high ponies, and textured low buns photograph well in low-lit indoor venues. The December events are typically warm-toned, so soft texture reads better than sharp graphic styles.

Photo shoots & red carpet

Editorial pin-work, vintage finger waves, and sculpted top knots are the categories we work in here. Bring the photographer or director's reference if you have one — we will match the silhouette and adjust hairline detail to the camera angle.

How long it holds

Lasting through the night

A well-pinned updo with proper setting product holds 12 to 18 hours through dinner, dancing, photographs, and a coat-on-coat-off situation in November. We finish every updo with a fixing spray, send you out with 6 to 10 emergency bobby pins in a small bag, and write a quick touch-up note for the night.

Conditions matter: humid outdoor venues, swimming-pool weddings, and long open-roof drives shorten the lifespan of any style. Soft, textured updos generally outlast smooth, sleek ones in any unpredictable environment.

Real questions, honest answers

Bridal — planning your wedding-day beauty

Everything brides book us with. Read before you inquire.

How far in advance should I book bridal hair and makeup?

For peak wedding months (May–October) book 6–9 months out. Off-peak dates can often be secured 3–4 months ahead. Trial sessions happen 4–8 weeks before the wedding.

Do you travel for on-location weddings?

Yes — anywhere in Greater LA. On-location bridal starts at $1,000 for hair or makeup solo, $1,500 for both. Travel fees are added for locations more than 30 minutes from West 3rd Street. Malibu, Palos Verdes, Ojai, and Palm Springs bookings need at least 4 months notice.

Should I trial my hair and makeup?

Yes. The trial is the single best insurance against wedding-day disappointment. It's a 60–90 minute session 4–8 weeks before your wedding where we test both looks with your inspiration photos, adjust for dress neckline and lighting, take reference photos, and lock in the exact plan. Trial fee is credited to your bridal package.

Will my makeup last through tears, hugs, and a full reception?

Yes. We use long-wear foundations (Danessa Myricks, Pat McGrath), waterproof mascara, and a setting spray designed for photography and heat. Bring your lipstick shade to reception dinners for touchups. Tears won't take down base makeup — but they will disturb the under-eye area, which we build with waterproof concealer.

I have a veil for the ceremony and want a different look after. Is that possible?

Yes. We commonly build ceremony-first-look hair (updo or half-up that works with the veil) with a second-look reception style planned into the day. This is usually 30–45 additional minutes and is part of the bridal package pricing.

What if it rains, the temperature drops, or the venue changes at the last minute?

We plan for LA weather ranges. Every bridal kit includes a heat-safe setting spray, hydrating primer for wind, and a small emergency kit (bobby pins, tissue, blot papers) we leave with the bridal party. If your ceremony moves indoors last minute, hair holds fine.

Do you do the bridesmaids too?

Yes — bridal-party pricing starts at $200 per person for hair or makeup (minimum 3 people). We time everyone into a schedule so the bride is finished last and photo-ready.

What if I want to bring my own makeup / skincare?

Absolutely welcome. Bring anything you know your skin loves — moisturizer, a specific SPF, a lipstick shade. We integrate your products into the look.

Is Brazilian Blowout safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

We do not perform Brazilian Blowout or keratin treatments on pregnant or actively breastfeeding clients. All smoothing formulas contain some form of aldehyde chemistry (formaldehyde-releasing or free-form) and the vapors during flat-ironing are not appropriate to expose a developing baby to. We'll book you when you're ready.

What's the difference between Brazilian Blowout, keratin treatment, and hair botox?

Brazilian Blowout smooths frizz without straightening; waves and curl return, only frizz is sealed — lasts 10–12 weeks. Keratin smoothing (Cadiveu, Kerabond) uses stronger aldehydes and does relax pattern slightly — 3–4 months. Hair botox is a reconstructive treatment with amino acids, no straightening effect — 6–8 weeks.

Can I get Brazilian Blowout on bleached / highlighted hair?

Yes. Brazilian Blowout is compatible with color-treated hair including balayage, highlights, and single-process bleach. On heavily lightened hair (levels 9–10) we may recommend hair botox first as a reconstructive layer before the smoothing service. Never do a smoothing service the same day as bleach.

How soon after can I wash my hair?

Traditional keratin: 3 days before first wash, no clips, no pony, no tucking behind ears. Brazilian Blowout: same-day washing allowed and the finish is done in the salon. Always use sulfate-free shampoo — sulfates strip smoothing treatments fast and you'll get 6 weeks instead of 12.

Can I dye my hair on the same day as a smoothing treatment?

Color first, smoothing second. In the same appointment: color → tone → smoothing treatment. Doing smoothing before color removes half the color pigment during the wash. We schedule combined services in this specific order and it takes 3.5–4 hours total.

Will Brazilian Blowout make my hair fall out?

Correctly applied, no. What causes rare post-smoothing shedding is either: (1) hair that was already in a shedding cycle unrelated to the service, or (2) bad aftercare (heavy sulfates strip protein rapidly). We use bond-builder before and after the treatment as a safety net.

How much shine reduction is normal 6 weeks in?

You should still see clear mirror shine at week 6. If you're losing shine before week 6, check your shampoo — anything with sulfates or sodium chloride strips smoothing treatments. Switch to Davines OI Shampoo, Kerastase Discipline, or similar and you'll extend results by 3–4 weeks.

Can I swim in chlorine or the ocean after?

Wet your hair with fresh water and apply leave-in conditioner before pools or ocean. Chlorine and salt will lift the treatment faster. If you can, wear a swim cap for pool laps. Rinse immediately after swimming.

I'm on Accutane / isotretinoin. Can I get a facial?

Only very gentle hydrating facials — no extractions, no chemical exfoliation, no microdermabrasion, and no LED light. You need to be off Accutane for 6 months before we can do extraction, peels, or any resurfacing treatment. Just booked a mani-pedi? Facials are fine.

Can I get a chemical peel or facial while pregnant?

Gentle facials (hydration, gentle enzyme exfoliation, lymphatic drainage) are pregnancy-safe. Chemical peels with glycolic, salicylic, or TCA acids are not recommended. Avoid any high-frequency, retinol treatments, or benzoyl peroxide during pregnancy. Tell us at booking and we'll customize.

How often should I get facials?

Monthly is ideal — matches your skin's 28-day cell turnover. Signature or hydrating facials monthly, with a deeper peel every 2–3 months. For acne clients we sometimes recommend every 2 weeks for the first 8 weeks, then monthly maintenance.

What if I have active acne?

Come in — that's exactly what facials help with. We adjust based on inflammation level. During active breakouts we prioritize gentle deep cleansing and blue LED, not aggressive extractions. Aggressive extraction on inflamed skin spreads bacteria.

Can I wear makeup after a facial?

Not for 4–6 hours. Your pores are open and product will settle deeper than usual, which can cause breakouts. Skip full makeup for the rest of the day; a tinted SPF is fine.

What should I bring or avoid?

Come with clean skin (or we'll cleanse for you). Avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, or benzoyl peroxide for 3 days before a peel or aggressive facial. Bring a list of prescription medications and any skin conditions.
