Do not wash for 24–48 hours before a color service. Your scalp's natural oils act as a barrier and reduce burning or itching from lightener and permanent color. Come with dry hair, no leave-ins, no dry shampoo, no styling product.

Root touch-up for single-process: every 4–6 weeks. Balayage: 3–4 months (roots grow in naturally). Highlights or foils: 8–12 weeks. Vivid or fashion colors (pastels, reds, coppers): every 4–6 weeks — these fade fastest. A gloss/toner every 4–6 weeks between color services keeps tone from turning brassy or dull.

Highlights are painted with foils in defined sections for uniform lift, best when you want structured brightness or full-head blondes. Balayage is hand-painted freehand — softer, more dimensional, lower-maintenance because roots grow out naturally. Balayage is a technique, not a formula. At MUA Salon full balayage starts at $300, partial at $180.

Yes if any of these apply: first-time professional hair color, 12+ months since your last color, previous reaction to hair dye, or known PPD (paraphenylenediamine) allergy. A patch test is a small dab of dye behind the ear or inner arm, checked 48 hours later. Book the patch test 2–3 days before your color appointment.

Yes, but it takes multiple sessions and hair integrity is the constraint. Box dyes deposit high pigment and often contain metallic salts that react badly to lightener. We start with a free consultation, a strand test, and often a color remover (Malibu or Colour Prep) before lightener. Expect 2–4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart, with bond builders (Olaplex, K18) at every step.

Yes. Gray blending uses demi-permanent color plus lowlights or highlights to soften the gray so it looks like a highlight rather than a root. It requires no root touch-up because it grows in naturally. Best when gray is under 40% of your hair. Above 40% gray, single-process root color usually looks cleaner.

Olaplex (or K18) repairs broken disulfide bonds — the exact damage caused by lightener, permanent color, heat, and chemical straightening. Worth adding whenever you're lifting more than one level, correcting box dye, doing a Brazilian Blowout, or if hair already feels dry. Adds $30–50 depending on hair length.

Reschedule if your appointment falls on day 1 or 2 of your cycle. Estrogen and progesterone drops make skin more sensitive — pain feels sharper, you bleed more during the procedure, and pigment retention drops by roughly 20–30%. The sweet spot is days 5–14. Ovulation days (12–14) show the best pigment healing.

No. We do not perform microblading, nano brows, lip blush, or any PMU procedure on pregnant or actively breastfeeding clients. Concerns: stress on the immune system, hormone-driven pigment shifts (color heals unpredictably), and the small risk of blood-borne pathogens crossing to baby. We book you a consultation for after weaning.

Avoid these for 48–72 hours before your PMU appointment: aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, ginseng, alcohol. They thin the blood, cause bleeding during application, dilute pigment, and produce patchy healing. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner (warfarin, Eliquis, Plavix) without your doctor.

No. Accutane (isotretinoin) makes skin extremely fragile and delays healing — you must be off Accutane for at least 12 months before any PMU. Attempting PMU on Accutane skin can cause scarring. If you're on topical Retin-A or tretinoin, stop 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after PMU.

Botox in forehead/glabella + microblading: either 2 weeks before microblading or 4 weeks after. Mapping brows on unsettled muscle means the shape drifts when the muscle relaxes. Lip filler + lip blush: filler 4 weeks before or 6 weeks after. Never same-day. Cheek and jawline filler does not conflict with brow PMU.

Microblading works but fades faster on oily skin — sebum breaks down pigment and blurs the fine hair strokes. We usually recommend nano brows over microblading for oily/combination skin: the machine deposits pigment more evenly, heals with sharper strokes, and lasts 2–3 years vs 1–2. Free 15-minute consultation confirms which suits your skin.

Most clients describe it as a light scratching. Topical lidocaine cream before and during keeps pain at 2–3 out of 10. Pain tolerance is higher on days 5–14 of your cycle and lower right before or during your period.

Days 1–3: color looks 30–40% darker; brows feel tight. Days 4–7: light flaking or scabbing lifts naturally — do NOT pick. Days 8–14: color appears very light (the 'ghost stage') as new skin covers pigment. Weeks 3–6: color re-emerges to true tone. Week 6–8: perfecting touch-up (included). Full heal at 4–6 weeks. Avoid sweat, sun, makeup, and water for the first 10 days.

Often yes, but not always. Bring photos of the original work and current state to a free consultation. If pigment is heavily saturated or shows an unwanted color (blue-gray, orange, red), you may need a saline lightening session or laser removal first. Nano brows sometimes cover old microblading better than fresh microblading does.

Microblading: 1–2 years. Nano brows: 2–3 years. Lip blush: 2–5 years. Permanent eyeliner: 3–5 years. The 6–8 week perfecting touch-up is included in your initial price. Every 4–6 weeks is the standard cadence — it matches skin's natural cell turnover cycle (28 days at age 20, closer to 45 days by age 50). Acne-focused facials can be every 2–3 weeks during a breakout period. Weekly facials are usually too much and disrupt the barrier. For a big event: book 2–3 weeks ahead so any temporary redness resolves.

Yes. Pause retinol, tretinoin, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and physical exfoliants for 5–7 days before a facial. These thin the outer skin layer and make you prone to over-exfoliation, burning, or extraction bruising. Restart retinoids 5 days after the facial or when redness has fully calmed.

Yes, safe when done by a licensed esthetician with a sterile single-use blade. Dermaplaning removes dead skin and vellus hair (peach fuzz) and does NOT make hair grow back thicker or darker — that's a myth. Vellus hair regrows at the same texture in 3–4 weeks. Not for active acne, cystic breakouts, or rosacea flares. Sunscreen for 5 days after is essential.

Yes, but skip anything with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, high-strength glycolic acid, or hydroquinone. Safe during pregnancy: hydrating facials, gentle enzyme peels, LED light therapy, oxygen facials, lymphatic drainage. Skip microneedling and chemical peels over 20% glycolic. Always tell your esthetician you're pregnant.

A traditional facial cleans, exfoliates, extracts, masks, and moisturizes — all manual or semi-manual, 60–90 minutes. Strongly recommended. 60–90 minutes: we test hair styling and makeup with reference photos, adjust to your dress neckline and lighting, and take reference photos from every angle. Yes. Bridal party services are billed per person and per service. We recommend one hairstylist per 3 attendees and one makeup artist per 4 attendees to finish by ceremony call time. We build a detailed schedule during your trial. Junior attendants (flower girls, ring bearers under 12): $50 each.

Single-use disposables for every PMU client (needles, blades, pigment cups, gloves), hospital-grade surface sanitization between clients, ventilated PMU stations, sterilization protocol meeting California CBBC guidelines. All PMU artists complete Bloodborne Pathogen Certification annually. Autoclave sterilization for reusable non-porous tools. Licensed and inspected by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
