The MUA color philosophy

Color built for your hair, your skin, and your routine

Color is the most personal hair service. The right blonde for your friend will not be the right blonde for you, and the wrong shade will read off-key for weeks. The MUA color philosophy is simple: every appointment starts with a consultation, every formula is custom, and every finish is built to flatter your skin tone and fit the maintenance schedule you can actually keep.

We work on Davines color, the Italian B-Corp luxury color line, because the formulas deliver natural-looking dimension and the brand's sustainability practices align with how we run the studio. The matching daily and weekly Davines aftercare is sold in studio at the Davines shop. Master colorists on staff handle balayage, foil work, color correction, and fashion shades.

Compare

Highlights vs. Balayage vs. Full Color vs. Gloss

The four most-asked-about color services at MUA Salon, side by side. Use this to narrow your search before consultation.

Service Technique Price Duration Refresh
Highlights Foiled, structured lift From $300 ~3.5 hours 8–10 weeks
Balayage Hand-painted, freeform lift From $300 ~3 hours 4–6 months
Full color Single-process, root-to-tip From $250 ~1.5 hours 4–6 weeks
Gloss Tone-only, no lift $90 45 min 4–6 weeks

Many clients combine techniques across appointments — a balayage in spring, a gloss in summer, foiled face-frame highlights in fall, and a root touch-up in winter. Your colorist will recommend the cadence that fits your hair, your lifestyle, and your budget.

The consultation

How a color consultation works at MUA

Every new color service at MUA Salon begins with a 10 to 15 minute consultation in the chair. The colorist looks at your hair under the studio lights, asks about the last six months of color history, and walks through your reference photos.

  1. Reference photos. Bring two or three. Save them as inspiration, not as a guarantee — the colorist will tell you which elements translate to your base.
  2. Hair history. Tell us about every box dye, every salon color, every gloss, every keratin treatment, and every henna application for the last six months. Even faded color affects how the formula develops.
  3. Lifestyle. Be honest about how often you can come back. We will recommend the right service, not the most expensive one.
  4. Strategy & quote. The colorist sketches the placement, names the toning shade, and confirms the final price before mixing color.

For complex color goals — going from black to platinum, fixing a previous salon color, or moving from a fashion shade to a natural one — we may recommend a paid consultation appointment first to map out a multi-session plan. The colorist will tell you up front rather than rushing the work in a single chair.

Pricing factors

What affects color pricing

Published prices on this page are the starting rate. Final pricing is quoted in the chair at consultation and depends on the variables below.

  • Hair length. Longer hair takes more product and more time. Hair past mid-back is typically billed higher than the published rate.
  • Density. Thicker hair takes more product and more time. Very dense hair is typically billed higher.
  • Starting level. Lifting from a level 2 black to a bright blonde is a longer, more careful service than refreshing an existing blonde.
  • Color history. Previous box dye, henna, banding, or unevenness can require pre-treatment passes that add time.
  • Toner or gloss. Most published prices include a toning gloss. Some services may require a second gloss, billed separately.
  • Add-ons. Bond-builder, deep conditioning, scalp treatment, or extra toner are quoted at consultation.
  • Color correction. Always quoted per case. Plan for a longer first appointment and possibly a second session.
Longevity

How long each service lasts

Maintenance schedules vary by service. Plan your year in advance so the color is always fresh when you need it.

  • Full color & root touch-up: every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Highlights: partial every 8 to 10 weeks; full every 4 to 6 months. See the highlights page.
  • Balayage: every 4 to 6 months, with a gloss in between. See the balayage page.
  • Color change: 4 to 6 weeks if you want to maintain the new tone, longer if you want it to fade out.
  • Gloss: every 4 to 6 weeks between bigger color appointments.
  • Bleach root touch-up: every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Full bleach: the lift itself is permanent; root touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks maintain the look.

For aftercare guidance, pick up the matching Davines routine in our Davines shop: sulfate-free shampoo, weekly mask, and heat protectant are non-negotiable for color longevity.
