A long, dimensional hair extension result by MUA Salon's stylist team in Los Angeles
Overview

What hair extensions actually are

Hair extensions are professionally prepared lengths of human hair that a stylist attaches to your existing hair to add length, volume, dimension, or all three. They live under the top layers of your natural hair, so the attachment points are invisible — what reads is more hair, longer hair, or thicker ends.

At MUA Salon, every extension service begins with a consultation under the studio lights, a custom color match, a tension-tested install plan, and a finishing cut to blend the new lengths seamlessly into your own hair. We finish every appointment with a Davines aftercare regimen and walk you through brushing, washing, and sleeping with extensions before you leave the chair. For category-wide context, see the full service menu and the hair color overview.

Methods

The methods we work with

MUA stylists are trained across multiple application methods because no single technique fits every head. Your stylist will recommend the right one at consultation based on your hair type, density, lifestyle, and the look you want.

Tape-in extensions

Pre-taped wefts sandwiched against your natural hair with a polymer adhesive. Lightweight, fast to install, comfortable to sleep on. A good fit for fine to medium hair. Maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks.

Hand-tied weft & sew-in

Wefts are sewn into a foundation of small braided or beaded anchors placed across the head. The most secure method for medium to thick hair, with the smoothest lay-flat feel. Maintenance every 8 to 10 weeks.

Keratin or I-tip strands

Strand-by-strand application using a keratin bond or a small bead-and-loop tip. The most movement and the most natural-feeling result, with no visible track. Maintenance every 3 to 4 months.

Pricing on this page covers the application labor. The cost of the hair itself is quoted separately and depends on length, density, and the manufacturer. Your stylist will give you a flat quote at the consultation, before you commit.

Color matching

Matching the hair to yours

Color matching is the difference between extensions that look styled in by a professional and extensions that look stuck on. At MUA Salon every install begins with the stylist holding multiple swatches against your hair under the studio lights — first under the warm front lamps, then under the daylight at the window — to find the right base, root shadow, and highlight pattern.

Most installs use two or three shade families blended in a custom pattern: the root family that mirrors your regrowth, the mid-shaft family that carries through dimension, and the end family that picks up the brightness you wear at the front and ends. If your hair has just been balayaged, highlighted, or otherwise refreshed, schedule the color appointment at least one week before the install so we can match against the finished tone.

For clients with custom color goals — fashion shades, color-corrected hair, or a specific blonde tone — we may recommend an in-studio toning gloss on the extensions before installation. That work is quoted at consultation.

Length & volume

Planning length and density

The two questions every client asks at consultation: "How long can I go?" and "How much hair do I need?"

Length

Aim for an addition that respects the proportion of your own hair. As a rule, extensions should not extend more than five to seven inches beyond your natural length, otherwise the blend at the bottom looks thin. Common finished lengths at MUA range from 18 inches (just past collarbone) to 24 inches (mid-back). Going longer is possible but usually requires a fuller density to keep the ends looking solid.

Volume

Density is measured in grams of hair. A typical thickening install for fine hair runs 100 to 150 grams. A standard length-and-volume install for medium hair runs 150 to 200 grams. A dramatic length addition for thick or coarse hair can run 220 grams or more. Your stylist will measure during the consultation and quote the right gram count.

The appointment

What application day looks like

  1. Arrival & final color check (15 min). The stylist confirms the color match against the hair you brought home from the consultation, makes any last toner adjustments, and walks through the final placement plan.
  2. Sectioning & mapping (15 min). Hair is washed, blow-dried smooth, and sectioned according to the install plan — track lines for wefts, foundation rows for sew-ins, or strand grids for keratin or I-tip work.
  3. Installation (60–90 min). The bonds, tapes, or wefts are placed one at a time with calibrated tension. The stylist checks lay-flat comfort and head movement throughout.
  4. Cut & blend (20–30 min). A fresh cut is shaped through the extensions and your natural hair so the new lengths read as one head of hair. We point-cut, slide-cut, or scissor-over-comb depending on your texture.
  5. Style & aftercare walkthrough (20 min). A finishing blow-dry or wave finish, a brush-through demo, and a Davines aftercare set explained step by step before you leave the chair.

Plan for about 2.5 hours start to finish for a new application. Eat before you come, bring a charged phone, and skip oils or heavy serums the day-of — they compromise tape and bond adhesion.

Lifespan

How long extensions last and how often to come back

With careful aftercare, the hair itself stays in good condition for 6 to 12 months and can be re-used across several re-application appointments. The attachment — the tape, weft, or bond — is what needs maintenance, and the cadence depends on the method.

  • Tape-ins: re-apply every 6 to 8 weeks. The tape moves down with grow-out and needs to be removed, the hair re-taped, and re-set against your scalp.
  • Hand-tied weft / sew-in: re-tighten every 8 to 10 weeks. The foundation rows are loosened, slid up to fresh anchors, and re-secured.
  • Keratin or I-tip strands: re-bond every 3 to 4 months. The bonds are removed, the hair is cleaned and re-tipped, and the strands are re-installed.

Re-application at MUA Salon is $500 and runs about two hours. We re-use the hair you already own as long as the strands are still in good condition, and we will tell you honestly when it is time to retire a set and order new hair. Book a re-application directly.

Removal

Professional removal

Removal at MUA Salon is $200 and runs about 1.5 hours. Whether you are retiring a set, taking a break before a new install, or coming to us from another salon, our stylist will remove every tape, weft, or bond safely and without damage to your natural hair. Each method has its own removal chemistry and process — and pulling extensions out at home is the single most common cause of breakage we see in new clients.

Removal includes a thorough cleanse, a deep conditioning treatment, and a brief assessment of your natural hair so you know whether you are ready for a new install right away or whether a few weeks of recovery would serve you better. Book a removal.

Aftercare

Daily care with Davines

Wash & condition

  • Sulfate-free shampoo only — we recommend Davines OI shampoo for daily softness, MOMO for dry hair, and Heart of Glass for blondes.
  • Wash no more than two or three times per week. Brush before you wash and brush again before you condition.
  • Apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends, never on the bonds, tapes, or wefts.
  • Rinse with cool water for shine.

Dry & style

  • Pat with a microfiber towel — never wring or wrap tightly.
  • Brush from ends upward with a loop brush or a soft-bristle paddle.
  • Heat-protect before any iron or blow-dryer above 350°F.
  • Avoid heat directly on the bonds, tapes, or attachment points.

Sleep, swim, sweat

  • Always sleep with hair fully dry. Loose braid or low pony at night to prevent tangling.
  • Silk or satin pillowcase preserves both your hair and the extension hair.
  • Tie hair back before workouts and shampoo within a few hours if you have been swimming in chlorine or salt water.
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner like Davines OI All in One Milk before swimming.

Pick up your routine

We sell the full Davines routine in studio. Stop by the Davines shop at the end of your appointment to pick up your shampoo, conditioner, mask, and styling milk — or browse online and we will have it ready when you arrive.

FAQ

Hair extensions, asked & answered

How much do hair extensions cost at MUA Salon?

A new application is $700 and runs about 2.5 hours. Re-application is $500 and runs about 2 hours. Removal alone is $200 and runs about 1.5 hours. The cost of the hair itself is quoted separately at consultation.

How long does the application appointment take?

About 2.5 hours for a new application, 2 hours for a re-application, and 1.5 hours for a removal. Add 30 to 60 minutes for very long, very thick, or very dense head sets.

What types of hair extensions do you offer?

We work with tape-in extensions for fine to medium hair, hand-tied weft and sew-in extensions for medium to thick hair, and keratin or I-tip strand-by-strand extensions for clients who want maximum movement. The right method is confirmed at consultation.

Do you color match my hair?

Yes. Matching happens in the chair under studio lights and usually blends two or three shade families. If your color was recently refreshed, schedule the color appointment at least a week before installation.

How long do hair extensions last?

The hair itself lasts 6 to 12 months with careful aftercare. Tape-ins re-apply every 6 to 8 weeks; hand-tied wefts every 8 to 10 weeks; keratin or I-tip strands every 3 to 4 months.

How do I care for hair extensions?

Use sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating mask, brush from ends upward, never sleep on wet hair, and braid loosely at night. We recommend Davines OI shampoo, OI All in One Milk, and Heart of Glass for blondes — pick up the routine in the Davines shop.

Will hair extensions damage my natural hair?

Not when installed at the right tension, maintained on schedule, and removed by a professional. The most common cause of breakage is wearing extensions past their re-application window — book maintenance every 6 to 10 weeks.

Can I swim, work out, and style my extensions?

Yes. Tie hair back for workouts, rinse and shampoo within a few hours after pool or ocean water, and use a heat protectant before any iron above 350°F. Avoid putting heat directly on the bonds or tapes.

Do I need a consultation before booking the application?

Yes — most clients book a 15 to 20 minute consultation first so the stylist can match color, plan length and density, and order the hair. The application is then booked about a week later.

How do I book hair extensions at MUA Salon?

Book through Square: application, re-application, or removal. Or call (323) 775-3637.
