Tape-in vs sew-in vs weft vs clip-in — the math that decides for you

By Burcin Goksu, MUA Salon master stylist — · Practical first-year-cost framework

Most clients arrive at the consult with the wrong question: "Which extension method is best?" The answer that matters is "Which one survives year one with me?" Your hair density, your pool schedule, your sleeping habits, your wedding next April — these decide far more than the method's reputation on TikTok. Below is the framework we actually use in the consult chair.

The first-year cost most clients underestimate

The install price is the small part. Maintenance and removal are the rest. Here is what each method actually costs in year one at MUA Salon:

Tape-in (8-week cycle)
Install: $700 · Reapply 6× over the year: $500 × 6 = $3,000 · Removal at end: $200 → $3,900 year one

Sew-in (12-week cycle)
Install: $900 · Maintenance tightening 4×: $400 × 4 = $1,600 · Removal: $200 → $2,700 year one

Weft / beaded (10-week cycle)
Install: $1,100 · Reapply 4×: $500 × 4 = $2,000 · Removal: $200 → $3,300 year one

Clip-in (one-time)
Quality 18" Remy set: $400 (no salon install needed) → $400 year one, no salon dependency

Sew-in is the cheapest annualized method if you can tolerate the look-and-feel during the first two weeks of each install. Clip-in is dramatically cheapest if you only want extensions for events. Tape-in is the most expensive once you include maintenance — clients are often shocked by this.

The density test that decides three of these for you

Before any consult, do this at home: pull your dry hair into a low ponytail at the base of your neck. Measure the ponytail diameter with a coin.

  • Smaller than a quarter: low density. Tape-in lines will show through. Sew-in or hybrid weft is the right call. Clip-in works for special occasions but daily wear telegraphs through fine hair too.
  • Between a quarter and a half-dollar: medium density. All four methods work. Decision moves to lifestyle factors below.
  • Larger than a half-dollar: high density. Tape-in performs best because you have plenty of natural hair to anchor against. Sew-in can feel heavy. Weft is fine but unnecessary for your density.

Pool, ocean, and 95-degree days

LA's coastal access changes the extension math. Be honest about your water exposure:

  • Tape-in adhesive softens above 95°F sustained heat. A day at Disneyland in August is a problem. Hot yoga 4× per week is a problem. Saunas after gym are a problem. The bonds creep — the row sits 1cm lower after 6 weeks of heat exposure, and the install lifetime is cut in half.
  • Chlorine erodes weft beading. Beaded weft installs use a small silicone-lined micro-ring. Chlorine dries out the silicone. We have clients with pools who switch to sew-in for this reason.
  • Sew-in is the most water-tolerant. The thread holding the weft to your braided foundation does not care about heat or chlorine. The hair quality matters, but the install method survives.
  • Salt water is the worst for any extension hair. Rinse with cool water within an hour of ocean exposure. Use a Davines OI All in One Milk before swimming as a protective barrier.

The sleep test most installers skip

Tape-in extensions cannot tolerate sleeping with wet hair. Bonds soak, swell, and slide. Sew-in can — the thread doesn't care if it's damp. Weft is intermediate. If you are the type who washes your hair at night and goes to bed wet, tape-in will fail you in 4-6 months.

Same applies to pulling hair into a top knot or claw clip overnight. Tape-in bonds bend and crack at the row line under tension. Sew-in handles tension because the row is built to be pulled.

Real recommendations by lifestyle

Beverly Hills executive, fine hair, no pool, daily blowout: Weft (beaded). Best camouflage on fine hair, no adhesive risk, 10-week cycle fits a busy schedule.

Brentwood mom, medium hair, occasional weekend pool: Tape-in. Easy to maintain, easy to remove for vacations, predictable cycle. Pool exposure is manageable if she rinses post-swim.

Hollywood actor, fine medium hair, on-set transformations: Clip-in plus a permanent low-density tape-in for the off-set base. Best of both worlds.

Studio City fitness instructor, daily hot yoga: None of the permanent methods. We recommend clip-in for the rare occasions she wants length and skip the rest. The heat will fail tape-in within 4 months and we won't take her money on a service we know will degrade.

Pasadena bride, wedding in 8 weeks: Tape-in install now so the bonds settle for photos. Plan removal for 3 months post-wedding so she can revert to her natural hair.

What we won't do

  • Day-of-wedding install. Too rushed, photos show new bonds.
  • Install on damaged or chemically over-processed hair (we'll do a deep conditioning treatment plan first).
  • Install on minors without parent consent.
  • Cheap-hair installs from clients who bring their own AliExpress hair. Quality of hair determines lifespan; bad hair fails our install no matter how good the technique.
  • Install for clients with diagnosed traction alopecia (we'll refer to a trichologist instead).

FAQ

Will extensions damage my real hair?

Properly installed extensions do not damage hair. Damage comes from three things: an inexperienced installer placing tape-ins too high, wearing the same install too long without maintenance, and sleeping with wet hair under tension. We have removed tape-ins where the bond was placed less than 1cm from the scalp and pulled hair out at the root. Find an installer who shows you their last 10 removals, not just their installs.

Can I get extensions if I have very fine hair?

Yes, but the method matters. Tape-in can telegraph through fine hair as visible lines. Weft (beaded) hides better. We sometimes recommend a hybrid — fewer wefts placed higher with a face-frame tape-in for visible volume only where needed. Cost is closer to $1,200 install.

How long do extensions last before they need full replacement?

Quality human hair extensions last 6-12 months with proper care. Synthetic blends last 3-4 months. The hair we use at MUA is 100% Remy human, double-drawn, and rated for 12 months of wear with bi-monthly maintenance. We have clients on their second year with the same hair.

What if I want to take them out for a vacation?

Tape-in and weft can be removed and reinstalled if you bring the hair back undamaged. Removal is $200, reinstall on stored hair is $300. Sew-in cannot be paused — once removed, the hair is typically not reused.

Do extensions work with bridal styles?

Yes — many of our bridal clients add extensions for the wedding specifically. We recommend either clip-in just for the day (no commitment) or tape-in installed 6 weeks before so the bonds settle and look natural in photos. Day-of-wedding install is too rushed; we won't do it.
