Hair Botox in Los Angeles

Hair botox at MUA Salon is a deep-conditioning protein and peptide treatment that repairs the inside of damaged, dry, or over-processed hair without changing your natural texture. Despite the name, it contains no actual botulinum toxin — it is a formaldehyde-free repair masque that softens, smooths, and adds shine. The service is $150 for a 2-hour appointment at our studio at 8336 West 3rd Street in Beverly Grove, Los Angeles.

Overview

What hair botox actually is

Hair botox is a deep-conditioning treatment — not an injection, not a chemical straightener, and not a smoothing service. Despite the name, it has no relationship to cosmetic botulinum toxin. The name comes from its restorative effect: like injectable botox softens fine lines, hair botox softens damage, frizz, and dullness in the strand.

The active ingredients are proteins (keratin amino acids, collagen), peptides, lipids, and conditioning agents. They penetrate the cuticle, fill in micro-damage along the cortex, and seal under heat. The result is hair that feels softer, looks shinier, holds color better, and resists daily breakage — without the chemical straightening you would get from a keratin treatment or the cuticle coating you would get from a Brazilian blowout.

Who it's for

The right candidate

Hair botox is the right pick for hair that is damaged but not chemically over-stressed beyond repair. Common signals you would benefit:

  • You bleach, balayage, or highlight regularly and your ends feel dry, fragile, or over-porous.
  • Your hair takes color but loses softness within a week.
  • You blow-dry, flat-iron, or curl daily and the mid-lengths feel rough.
  • You live in a dry climate, swim chlorinated water, or sit in steam rooms often.
  • Your hair is shedding more than usual at the cuticle (snapping mid-shaft, not at the root).
  • You want to extend the life of your color without going under more chemistry.

Hair botox does not strip color, does not relax curl pattern, and does not change density. It is a maintenance treatment, not a styling change.

Comparison

Hair botox vs keratin vs Brazilian blowout

Three smoothing-adjacent services often confused for one another. Here is the honest difference.

Choose hair botox if you want to repair damage and keep your natural texture. Choose keratin if you want the longest-lasting smoothing result. Choose Brazilian blowout if you want the smoothest, glossiest finish for curl-pattern frizz without permanent change.

The appointment

What treatment day looks like

  1. Consultation (10 min). The stylist evaluates damage, porosity, and color history. We confirm the formula and tell you what to expect.
  2. Deep cleanse (10 min). A clarifying shampoo strips product residue so the masque can penetrate evenly.
  3. Application (20 min). The protein and peptide masque is applied section by section, mid-shaft to ends, with a smaller dose at the root for fine hair.
  4. Process (30-40 min). Hair sits under gentle heat so the masque can fill the cortex. We monitor saturation and adjust process time to your hair's porosity.
  5. Rinse and seal (15 min). Hair is rinsed thoroughly. A sealing serum is applied and the hair is blown out, then heat-sealed with a flat iron at a calibrated temperature to lock the protein in.
  6. Finish (15 min). A finishing blow-dry, gloss, and aftercare walkthrough.

Plan for about 2 hours start to finish. Come with hair that has not been washed within the last 12 hours so the cuticle is in its natural state.

Longevity

How long it lasts

Hair botox lasts 4 to 8 weeks depending on hair type, wash frequency, and aftercare. Clients who shampoo daily and live in dry climates see results closer to the 4-week mark; clients who wash 2 to 3 times per week with sulfate-free shampoo and use a hydrating mask weekly see results stretch toward 8 weeks.

Most clients book hair botox once every 4 to 6 weeks as part of their color or smoothing maintenance routine — often timed alongside balayage or highlights so the color and the repair happen in complementary cycles.

Honest expectations

What hair botox will and will not do

Hair botox is a maintenance treatment, not a styling service. It is critical to set expectations clearly so the result is actually what you booked for. Here is the honest version.

What it does

  • Repairs micro-damage along the hair shaft, especially at the cuticle and cortex.
  • Adds softness, slip, and shine that lasts 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Reduces the appearance of split ends temporarily by sealing the cuticle.
  • Improves color longevity by helping the cuticle hold pigment longer.
  • Makes daily styling easier — less heat, less product, less effort.

What it does not do

  • It does not chemically straighten hair. Your wave or curl pattern stays.
  • It does not change your hair color or remove tone.
  • It does not regrow hair or change density at the scalp.
  • It does not permanently repair severely damaged hair — at a certain damage threshold, the only fix is to cut.
  • It does not last past the next two or three washes if you are using sulfate shampoo.

If your goal is to physically straighten the hair, see keratin treatment or Brazilian blowout. If your goal is to change color, see the hair color overview.

Aftercare

Daily aftercare with Davines

  • Wait at least 48 hours before the first wash to give the protein time to fully set.
  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo. We recommend Davines NOUNOU shampoo and conditioner for damaged hair.
  • Apply a hydrating mask weekly. Davines NOUNOU mask is the in-studio favorite.
  • Use Davines OI All in One Milk as a daily leave-in for heat protection and softness.
  • Heat-protect before any tool above 350°F.
  • Avoid sulfate shampoos, clarifying shampoos, and chlorine for the duration of the result — they break down the protein bond faster.

Pick up the routine in the Davines shop on your way out, or browse online and we will have it ready when you arrive.

FAQ

Hair botox, asked & answered

What is hair botox?

A deep-conditioning treatment that uses proteins, peptides, amino acids, and lipids to fill in damaged hair. It does not contain botulinum toxin.

How much does hair botox cost?

$150 for a 2-hour appointment at MUA Salon.

How is it different from keratin?

Keratin chemically smooths the cuticle and lasts longer. Hair botox is a softer, formaldehyde-free repair treatment that doesn't change your texture. See keratin treatment for the alternative.

How is it different from Brazilian blowout?

Brazilian blowout fights frizz with a sealing coating. Hair botox repairs the strand from the inside. See Brazilian blowout for that service.

Who is hair botox for?

Damaged, dry, brittle, color-treated, bleach-stressed, or heat-styled hair. It's a great companion to balayage and highlights.

How long does it last?

4 to 8 weeks depending on hair type, wash frequency, and aftercare.

Does it change my hair texture?

No. Your curl or wave pattern stays. The treatment softens and smooths without straightening.

Can I do it on bleached hair?

Yes — bleached hair often benefits the most. Schedule it at least a week after a color appointment.

What is the aftercare?

Sulfate-free shampoo, weekly hydrating mask, daily leave-in, and heat protectant. We recommend Davines NOUNOU and OI.
