Microblading
Hand-tooled hair-stroke brows. $750, lasts 12–18 months, best on normal-to-dry skin.
See microblading →Lip blush — also called lip pigmentation — at MUA Salon costs $750 and takes about 2.5 hours, including the 6-week perfecting touch-up. Performed by trained PMU artists at our studio at 8336 West 3rd Street in Beverly Grove, Los Angeles, lip blush deposits semi-permanent pigment into the lip tissue to even tone, soften the border, and add a wash of color that lasts 2 to 5 years.
Lip blush is a permanent makeup technique that deposits semi-permanent pigment into the upper layer of the lip tissue. The result is a soft, even wash of color that defines the lip border, evens out uneven natural tone, and adds the kind of subtle saturation that makes lips look more rested and a touch fuller — without looking "made up."
At MUA Salon, every lip blush appointment includes a one-on-one consultation, a custom color match, hand-mapped shape design, the procedure, and a 6-week perfecting touch-up. We can work in three directions: warming a cool undertone, neutralizing a blue or violet undertone, or reshaping a faded lip border for sharper definition.
For category-wide context, see our full Permanent Makeup page. For the full salon menu, see services.
Lip blush is for anyone who wants fuller-looking, more defined lips without filler. It works especially well for clients with naturally pale or uneven pigment, for those whose lip border has softened with age, and for clients with a cool or blue undertone they would like to warm up.
Common reasons clients book lip blush: tired of putting on lipstick every morning; want a polished base for makeup-free days; want lip definition before a wedding (see bridal); recovering from filler dissolution and want to define the new shape; correcting an old permanent lip liner.
We do not perform lip blush on: clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, on blood thinners, recovering from chemotherapy, with active cold sores, with diabetes that's not well controlled, or with keloid scarring tendencies. Clients with a history of cold sores must take prescription antiviral medication starting 2 days before the appointment.
Plan for roughly 2.5 hours start to finish. Bring your own lip balm, drink water, and skip alcohol and caffeine 24 hours beforehand — both thin the blood and can affect pigment retention.
Lips look 50% darker than the final result, with mild swelling that resolves within 24 hours. Drink through a straw. Apply provided balm constantly.
Lips peel in light flakes. Don't pick. Drink water; keep balm on. Avoid spicy food, citrus, and very hot drinks.
Lips can look almost colorless — this is expected. Pigment is settling into deeper tissue and will "bloom back" over the next 4 weeks.
True healed color emerges. Begin daily SPF lip balm. Avoid retinol and acid lip exfoliants for the first 30 days.
The included touch-up sharpens the border, evens patches, and adjusts color. After the touch-up, the result is set.
Lip blush at MUA Salon lasts 2 to 5 years before a color refresh is recommended. Lips have unique fade physics: the tissue regenerates faster than brow skin, so pigment moves through the surface gradually — softening into a kissed-from-within wash before disappearing entirely.
What slows fade: daily SPF lip balm, no retinol or chemical exfoliants on the lips, gentle cleanser, hydration, and showing up for the 6-week perfecting touch-up. A maintenance refresh at year 2 keeps color crisp.
What speeds fade: chronic sun, smoking, frequent lip product with retinol or AHAs, and aggressive scrubs. Clients in Los Angeles who spend a lot of time outdoors fade faster than the 5-year ceiling — plan for a refresh around year 2 or 3.
Two follow-ups matter for lip blush: the perfecting touch-up at week 6 (included in the $750 price) and the color refresh every 2–3 years (booked separately).
The 6-week perfecting touch-up is part of the package. It's where we sharpen the border, even patches that lifted more pigment than expected, and adjust color depth based on how your lips healed. Without the touch-up, the work is technically incomplete — please plan for it.
Color refresh is billed at a reduced rate. Most clients return between years 2 and 3. If you wait beyond 5 years, the refresh is billed as a fresh lip blush session.
Lip blush, lip filler, and a daily tinted balm achieve different things. Here's how they compare in plain language.
Many clients pair lip blush with filler — the blush defines the shape, the filler adds volume. Many more skip filler entirely and find that lip blush gives the "fuller" look they actually wanted. Curious about combining lip blush with brows in a single appointment? See the BLD Signature Trio on the PMU page or the microblading and nano brows pages.
Lip blush is $750. The price includes the initial 2.5-hour session and the 6-week perfecting touch-up. A $150 non-refundable deposit secures the appointment.
2 to 5 years. Sun protection, lip balm, and avoiding exfoliating acids on the lips extend longevity. Most LA clients refresh around year 2 or 3.
Most clients describe it as a 4–5 out of 10 — slightly more sensitive than brow procedures. We use a two-stage topical numbing protocol; lips swell briefly, then settle within 24 hours.
The healed result is a soft, even wash of color — like you've been gently biting your lip. Never lipstick. We can match warm peach, neutral mauve, deeper berry, or a corrective tone that neutralizes blue or violet undertones.
Pregnant or breastfeeding clients, anyone on blood thinners, recovering from chemotherapy, with active cold sores, with diabetes that's not well controlled, or with keloid scarring tendencies. Cold-sore-prone clients must take prescription antivirals starting 2 days before the appointment.
About 2.5 hours, including consultation, color match, mapping, the procedure, and aftercare. Plan for an additional 30–45 minutes for the included 6-week touch-up.
Days 1–2: bold and swollen. Days 3–7: peeling and color shed. Day 10: lips often look almost colorless — this is expected. Weeks 2–6: pigment blooms back. The 6-week touch-up sets the final result.
Yes. The 6-week perfecting touch-up is included in the $750 price. Color-boost touch-ups beyond that are billed separately at a reduced rate.
Lip blush doesn't add volume the way filler does. It defines the border, evens tone, and adds a subtle wash of color — which makes lips look fuller without injection. Many clients use it instead of filler; some use both for a layered look.

Real answers to the questions our Los Angeles PMU artists get every week. If yours isn\
We recommend rescheduling if your appointment falls on the first two days of your menstrual cycle. Estrogen and progesterone levels affect skin sensitivity and clotting — you'll feel more pain, bleed more, and pigment retention drops. Days 5–14 of your cycle are ideal for PMU. This applies to microblading, nano brows, lip blush, and permanent eyeliner.
No. We do not perform microblading, nano brows, lip blush, or any PMU procedure on pregnant or actively breastfeeding clients. The concerns are stress on the immune system, hormone-driven pigment shifts (your color heals unpredictably), and the very small risk of blood-borne pathogens crossing to baby. We book you a consultation for after weaning.
Yes. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, ginseng, and alcohol for 48–72 hours before your appointment. These thin the blood, cause excess bleeding during application, and dilute the pigment — resulting in patchy healing. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine if you need pain relief. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner (warfarin, Eliquis, Plavix) without your doctor's approval.
No. Accutane makes skin extremely fragile and delays healing. You must be off Accutane for a minimum of 12 months before any PMU procedure. This is non-negotiable — attempting PMU on Accutane skin can cause scarring.
If you get Botox in the forehead or between the brows, get it either 2 weeks before microblading (so we can see the settled brow position) or 4 weeks after. Getting Botox right after PMU changes brow position and can distort the new shape while healing.
Often yes, but not always. Bring photos of the original work and current state to a free consultation. If pigment is heavily saturated or an unwanted color (blue-gray, orange), you may need a saline lightening session or laser removal before we can layer new work. Nano brows sometimes cover old microblading better than fresh microblading does.
Most clients describe it as a light scratching. We use topical lidocaine cream before and during the procedure, so pain typically stays at 2–3/10. Pain tolerance is higher on days 5–14 of your menstrual cycle and lower right before/during your period.
Days 1–3: color looks 30–40% darker and brows feel tight. Days 4–7: light flaking or scabbing lifts naturally. Days 8–14: color appears very light ('ghost stage') as new skin covers the pigment. Weeks 3–6: color re-emerges to its true tone. Week 6–8: perfecting touch-up session (included). Full heal at 4–6 weeks.
Oily skin holds microblading less well — hair strokes can blur into a solid look within 6–12 months. For oily skin we recommend nano brows (machine method with single-needle strokes) or powder brows — both hold sharper detail and last longer on oily skin types.
Yes to both. On darker lips we use neutralizing pigments to lift the natural color 1–2 shades and even out tone. If you have lip filler, get filler either 4 weeks before lip blush or 4 weeks after — never on the same week. We do not perform lip blush during an active cold-sore outbreak; if you have a history of cold sores, take valacyclovir per your doctor 3 days before and 3 days after.
That's exactly why we design carefully before the tool touches your skin — every session starts with a 20–30 minute brow-mapping process where we draw the shape and get your approval. The 6–8 week perfecting session lets us adjust density, shape, or color once you've lived with the result. If a full remove/redo is needed, we offer saline lightening at a discounted rate.
