Nano brows for oily skin in Los Angeles: the honest recommendation

If your skin produces enough oil that you blot at noon in Beverly Grove, microblading is not your best option. Nano brows are — and here's the real data from doing both techniques on hundreds of LA clients.

Why oily skin sabotages microblading

Microblading uses a hand tool with 12–18 tiny blades to cut hair-stroke incisions in the top layer of skin. Pigment sits in these cuts as they heal.

Oily skin does two things that ruin this:

Sebum expands the incisions. Constant oil production widens the cuts as they heal. Pigment spreads sideways instead of settling as crisp strokes.
Faster cell turnover. Oily skin regenerates 30–40% faster than dry. That means the pigment layer is being replaced faster — and it moves.

The result: crisp hair-stroke definition at week 4, blurred "watercolor" look by month 6, ghost-like fade by month 12.

How nano brows work differently

Nano brows use a rotary machine with a single ultra-fine needle (0.18mm — literally nano-sized). Instead of cutting, it taps pigment through the skin in individual dots that line up to form a stroke.

Why oily skin doesn't ruin this:

Points instead of incisions. Sebum doesn't widen a dot the way it widens a slice.
Deeper controlled deposit. Pigment goes into the reticular dermis, below the fast-turnover epidermis.
Machine consistency. Every dot is identical depth and pressure — hand tools vary.

Real retention data — our clients over 3 years

What we've measured on ~200 oily-skin LA clients:

Microblading on oily skin: Sharp for 4–5 months. Blurred by 8. Faded to shadow by 14 months. Full retouch needed at 12–15 months.
Nano brows on oily skin: Sharp for 12 months. Softly blurred by 18. Full retouch needed at 24 months.

Multiply that by cost: microblading $500 initial + $150 perfecting + $500 redo at year 1 = $1,150 first year. Nano brows $750 initial + $200 perfecting + $250 boost at 18 months = $1,000–$1,200 over 24 months.

Nano wins on 2-year cost, and you don't spend months looking at blurred brows.

How to know if you have oily skin (be honest)

You blot your T-zone at midday
Foundation slides off your face after 4 hours in LA humidity
Your Dermalogica facialist calls you "combination-oily" or "oily"
You use blotting papers regularly
Powder foundation doesn't stay matte past noon

Two or more of the above = you're oily enough that nano is the right pick. If you're only oily in summer and dry in winter, you're combination — microblading can still work, but plan for slightly shorter longevity.

Healing timeline (differs from microblading)

Nano brows heal cleaner than microblading because there are no scabs. Day-by-day:

Day 0–2: Deep saturation, slight puffiness. No open cuts to bleed.
Day 3–5: Slight shedding of superficial skin (like light dandruff). Almost no scabbing.
Day 6–10: "Ghost phase" — brows look 40–50% lighter than final color.
Day 14–21: True color emerges. Softer, more natural than microblading typically looks.
Week 6: Perfecting session.

When microblading still makes sense (even with oily skin)

Two edge cases:

You want the ultra-crisp hair-stroke look for a specific short-term event (wedding, wedding photos). Accept 6–8 months of retention.
You have very light natural brows and want to test PMU before committing to nano's longer commitment.
